The List Before the Ratings

Before RatedBooks had a rating site, a spreadsheet listed books people wanted checked and schools that held them. It drew titles from outside groups. This chapter traces the list and the links that later appeared in RatedBooks’ files.

Where did the book list come from? Who shared it?

Outside candidates enter a Utah working sheet

October–November 2021; later March 2022 reporting · Utah; national sources; Georgia

On November 11, 2021, a working spreadsheet titled "Working List of Potentially Obscene Books To Review 2021" was created. It tracks titles, source links, posts from the LaVerna and Mary pages, grade levels and school districts. Records dated November 12 cite PCHC, Protect Student Health Georgia, No Left Turn, Goodreads and other lists as sources for candidate titles.

On October 27, 2021, a Washington Parents United post described recruiting volunteers, searching school holdings and collecting book information across districts.

On October 30, 2021, a saved record dates the creation of the LaVerna in the Library Facebook page to that day.

On November 5, 2021, Brooke Stephens uploaded a video, "How to find books in Utah Public School District Libraries," part of a tutorial sequence linked from Utah Parents United's LaVerna page. On November 23, she uploaded "Book Spreadsheet Introduction." KUER separately reported that she was leading a Facebook effort to identify books in Utah schools.

On March 26, 2022, the Deseret News reported that Utah Parents United linked to a list of nearly 600 titles drawn from Goodreads and other databases. The list's source labels closely match the surviving working spreadsheet.

From working sheets to a rating website

Some source links from the November 2021 working list appear again in the April 2022 RatedBooks master sheet. A saved Utah Parents United LaVerna page dated November 25, 2021 also gives the contact address RatedBooks later used. That was months before its 2022 domain registration.

On March 24, 2022, the RatedBooks.org domain was re-registered. An unrelated site used the domain in 2015–2016.

Google Drive details date "Rated Book Review List: Author, Publisher and URL" to April 7, 2022. Some titles now dated April 14 had blank Date Added cells in the Legislature’s 2022 copy. That makes April 14 an unconfirmed import date.

On May 6, 2022, Google Drive file details identify Mary in the Library USA as owner of a copy of Natalie Cline's May 4 Draft 2 of a library model policy. Hosting the copy does not identify its author.

Saved pages from May 18 to 21, 2022 show RatedBooks’ earlier Wix site, its 1–5 scale and pages for several states. RatedBooks still redirects there. A May 19 saved page requires phone verification or a callback form to continue.

The saved RatedBooks homepage from March 8, 2026 links to LaVerna's Facebook group. Beside that link, it lists the same public email used in RatedBooks' incorporation filing.

On August 28, 2026, the RatedBooks Advocate page directed readers from reports and slicksheets to Amplify contacts, running a bill and creating a policy. The page was viewed on that date; its launch date is unknown.
